Grounding meditation + tips to deal with insomnia + dealing with angry people (and your own anger)

Live meditation and Q&A with Teacher of the Month Jeff Warren

So happy to join Teacher of the Month Jeff Warren for a live meditation and Q&A. If you missed it, you can watch (or rewatch) any time. Paid subscribers get the full session, and Jeff’s opening 10-minute guided meditation is free for everyone.

Jeff started things off with a grounding meditation, inviting everyone to shift attention from their thoughts into their bodies—relaxing the face, easing the shoulders, feeling the breath in the belly, and focusing on whatever simple sensation felt most comfortable.

After that we took some questions from all of you. Here’s some of what we covered:

  • A saner way to handle insomnia—rethinking “sleep” vs. “rest”

  • How to stay grounded when someone else’s anger is unavoidable

  • How to stay informed without getting emotionally torched by the news

  • Why joy is a legitimate form of resilience (and not a luxury)

During the insomnia portion of the conversation, many of you jumped in with your own hard-won tips—here’s a small sample:

  • “Gratitude practice. Every night before you sleep write a list of 3 things you are grateful for.”

  • “When I find myself awake in the middle of the night, I follow my breath as a base, letting myself sink deeper into the bed with each exhale.”

  • “Reading a regular book is good. No devices.”

  • “Body scans during sleeplessness are great.”

  • “On waking during the night, I do a gratitude alphabet: A is for acceptance, B is for breath, etc.”

Thank you to everyone who joined, and thanks again to Jeff. We didn’t get to all your great questions, so we’ll pick up a few more next week when he and I go live again on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. ET. The Zoom link is below the paywall.

One more thing: This year we’re taking part in #PodsFightPoverty—a joint effort across dozens of podcasts to support families in Rwanda with direct cash aid. Research shows that giving cash directly to families is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty. If you’re planning your year-end giving, consider joining us at GiveDirectly.org/Dan. Right now, your gift gets a 50% boost thanks to matching funds.

IPMF,

Dan
