Live meditation miniseries: The Buddhist Antidote to Anxiety

Day 1: Loving-kindness meditation + Q&A

Thanks so much to the more than 1,800 of you who joined me live for the day 1 of my weeklong meditation series all about anxiety. Each day, we are focusing on one of the four Brahma Viharas, a classic Buddhist list that roughly translates to “divine abodes”—not the type of language that usually appeals to me, but they are four qualities of mind, each of which can be trained through meditation.

Today was open to all subscribers, and it was all about the first quality of mind, loving-kindness. As you might imagine, the name initially triggered my gag reflex, but I genuinely can say that this practice has changed my life.

For those of you who couldn’t join us live—after a brief overview, I led a 10-minute loving-kindness meditation and then I answered questions.

The rest of the week is for paid subscribers only—here’s what’s coming up:

Tuesday May 20th through Friday the 23rd

  • Day 2: compassion (how to engage with the world without being overwhelmed by it).

  • Day 3: sympathetic joy (how to not give into envy, and all the pain that comes with it).

  • Day 4: equanimity (how to keep perspective and calm when things go to shit).

  • Day 5: We’ll double down on whichever abode feels appropriate.
