Long way of saying: do what works for you. Personally, I usually find myself establishing a style of practice that last several years, and that will change organically. So for me, right now it’s a mixture of loving kindness and open awareness. But it has shifted many times over the years.
Because I think, "Can I? Can I self-medicate with booze, Dan? Can I please?" (I mean. Technically, I can.)
Also because every recommendation I receive to do metta these days just ticks me right off. I'm like a teenager huffing off going, "Fine! I'll do it! Hmpf" ;)
I'm so thankful for you, Dan. Leaving my first comment ever here. During 2020, I finally started a semi regular meditation practice because of 10% Happier and you. I found an online sanga (no longer around) and the app/podcast. I don't have much time for podcasts or reading or meditation while running an internal NGO that's always strapped and running a million miles a minute, but yours is the only one I listen to with regularity (especially while traveling). I just wanted to say thank you. Though I fall off the wagon, I know I can begin again thanks to you and everyone you've had on your show and the app. I am learning how to make time for meditation and learning in this space because I want to be healthy and I want to be a better person showing up everyday in this very heavy world. I am looking forward to this week! Much love and inner peace M*ucka! :) You've been such a great support for me. - Erin
Perfect timing! I just retired from a fairly high stress job shifting to self-employment. My needs are met and I’ve cut out the biggest stressors in my life - how can I *still* be struggling with anxiety? This series will be a great form of not worrying alone. Looking forward to it.
Dan Harris, thank you for everything you do, but more importantly, thank you for your quick and witty sense of humor. That drug dealer comment had me on stitches from laughing. I very much appreciate that. Thank you.
Hi! The recent re-release of the episode about anxiety with Rinpoche was both illuminating and timely. I just gave my first TEDx talk a few weeks ago and could relate to Dan’s pre-talk anxiousness and Rinpoche’s “dying” comment. I’m a former university professor and have given talks all over the world to large audiences. Yet, the TEDx stage and live event was next level terrifying. I couldn’t figure out why. This episode helped me put it in context. Thank you!
Hey Dan, I’ve been sitting with a question I haven’t really seen addressed anywhere, and figured this might be the right space to ask.
My usual practice is pretty straightforward—following the breath, noticing thoughts, returning to the breath. I’ve also done some LovingKindness meditations, which I don’t mind at all and sometimes actually really enjoy.
That said, I’m wondering: what does a “typical” or well-rounded practice actually look like over time? Is it better to cycle through different styles of meditation regularly, or is it totally fine to stick with just one? Would a steady diet of LovingKindness be enough on its own?
My sense is that everybody has their own path. And that different styles of practice work at different times. As your practice evolves. One of Joseph’s common saying is, “whatever works.”

Appreciate any thoughts you have on this.
